Baracko really came out swinging at the Convention last night huh? As he was speaking, I couldn’t help but become overjoyed at the thought of him winning the Presidency. One day when my daughter is old enough to understand, we’ll be sipping our lattes and discussing how back when I was her age, only a certain type of pedigree was considered best-suited to run this country. Then we can break out in laughter and high-fives.
But hold on! McCain seems to have just moved up half a notch on the coolness scale by selecting a former beauty pageant runner-up as his VP (note..her wiki bio was literally just updated: Sarah Louise Heath Palin is the hot Governor of Alaska…. they now replaced “hot” with “current”. Hilarious). Hm.. I might have to reconsider my…. naw.. nevermind.
She’s speaking live now and keeps saying “I”raq (eye-rack). I have a peeve in which I can’t seriously vote for anyone who can’t even pronounce Iraq (ee-rock).

Promotion Code: HSEA6RW4LY4E

That’s the code for 15% off from US to Lima, Peru on AA. Wish we could go again. Although it’s still probably way more expensive even with the discount than what we paid a couple of years ago. But actually, 2011 would be a nice time to revisit, with the 100th anniversary and the return of it’s artifacts from Yale (although I hear this is yet again mired in controversy). Our daughter will be 2+ by then, maybe she can enjoy all of Machu Picchu’s newly restored colors with us!

Diapers
Filed Under Parenting | 2 Comments
We learned that an average new baby goes through 7-8 diapers a day. In a week that’s 49-58 diapers. In a month that’s 196-232 disposable diapers!!!! Not only is disposable diapers costly but it’s also not earth friendly either. I’m all about convenience but that’s a lot of dirty diapers to our planet.
The only diapers options we have are either cloth or disposable diapers, but then I found this gDiapers solution. The gDiapers uses refillable liners and these liners are biodegradable. Within 3 months it is completely compost into the soil while other disposable diapers take 500 years. Another wonderful part of the gDiapers is you can flush the wet liners in the toilet which is where waste should go. Trouble is with the gDiapers, it is a little less convenience and even more inconvenience with poo. Not to mention pricier. However, look at the diaper, it is so fashionable!!!!

Final Project Time
Filed Under teaching | Leave a Comment
I gave my students 4 weeks to work on their final project and today is the due date. For two weekends, I’ve been responsible and made myself available to answer any questions they might have, but nothing. No emails… so I thought cool… less work for me but deep down I had a gut feeling that on Monday morning I would see emails sitting in my inbox from my students. Sure enough, there are emails on questions they should’ve asked me a few days ago.
Hm…It was just last year that I was a studdent and I seriously don’t remember being like this nor was any of my classmates. Maybe there was and I just don’t know, but in any case, its interesting being on the other side of the class room.

Talking to a stomach
Filed Under Family, Parenting | Leave a Comment
I began speaking to the baby in Joanne’s stomach a couple of months ago, mainly in the form of reading. I’ve skipped a good number of days, but for this last month I’m trying hard to maintain consistency and read to the baby each night. They say it’s a good way for the father to bond with the newborn, where in most cases she would be predisposed to mom’s sounds and touches by nature. This is in addition to the music that Joanne has been playing for her as well. We try to aim the iPod speakers down under her belly, as to encourage her to move into a head-first position in preparation for labor. Whether or not this all works, I guess we’ll find out.
Any dads out there feel weird talking to a stomach? I still do. But she does kick when she hears my voice, kind of neat.

Only 4 weeks to go. Wonder how her size compares to other preggos at this stretch. We just had an ultrasound a few days ago, she’s at 5.2 lbs now. Joanne is hoping she won’t go too far past 7 lbs if at all. That would be painful.

Cole Calace, our third nephew, was born this past Friday, August 15th. The exact time, I’m not sure, but he weighed in at around 8 lbs. He’s healthy and looking good.

“Respect” for Chinese

Assuming the Spanish Olympic basketball team was even sincere in their ridiculous explanation for this picture of the team posing while pulling their eyes back, someone in their country might want to finally send them the memo that that is not a good thing to do.
Well, I guess the conclusion now is that they’re either A) racist or B) drop dead bimbo-style dumb and tacky.

We normally take a trip somewhere faraway, interesting and with good food each year, in order to refresh and break routine. However, with the pregnancy, high travel costs and the way this year has shaped, we obviously won’t be able to visit any exotic places anytime soon. Which is why we booked a local $90/night Priceline bid at the the 4-star Hilton! Yes, it will be strange enjoying time away from home, at home, but it’ll be key in helping us to relax during our last month before becoming full-time parents. We probably deserve a nice short break from all the physical (more so Joanne than myself) and mental preparation we’ve done. Besides, with all the shameless cost-saving antics of airlines these days, I’ll be glad not to contribute any of my hard earned money to them.

(Jury) Duty Calls During a Bad Time
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Got a rare Summons for jury service scheduled for September 4th. I’m glad they decided to wait until the month we deliver the baby to schedule me.. go figure! I’ll follow procedure and call the day before to see if I’m even called. Hopefully not… and if so, they’ll need to re-schedule me for later, as I’ll be busy. Funny though, I don’t recall ever having been called before. I’m pretty foreign to the whole process.
